Inadvertently missing from the published acknowledgments was the instrumental help of Barbara Bair, my co-editor / colleague on three volumes of The Papers of Will Rogers. Her intellectual insights and considerable research, including the history of vaudeville, provided valuable groundwork and inspiration for this study.
